Mindfulness & Real Happiness At Work
Sharon Salzberg is a compassionate and insightful figure in the world of mindfulness, meditation, and spirituality. As a New York Times best-selling author, she’s written nine full-length books, including Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness, The Kindness Handbook: A Practical Companion, Real Happiness – The Power of Meditation: A 28 Day Program, and most recently Love Your Enemies: How to Break the Anger Habit & Be a Whole Lot Happier.
Sharon has worked for many decades to bring Buddhist meditation practices to Western audiences: not only through her books but also through the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts. Sharon co-founded the Insight Meditation Society in 1974, along with Jack Kornfield and Joseph Goldstein. The Society is rooted in the Theravada Buddhist tradition and has been hosting retreats and talks for over forty years at its two facilities in rural Massachusetts.
Amongst its various retreat options, the Insight Meditation Society offers an annual three-month-long silent meditation retreat. This retreat is meant to emulate the vassa practice, where Theravada Buddhist monks adhere to a rigid schedule of meditation and reflection upon the dharma for several months at a time.
In the realm of Theravada Buddhist tradition, Sharon’s contemplative and pedagogical focus is on vipassanā (insight) and mettā (loving-kindness) meditation methods. These techniques can be useful both for seasoned students of meditation, as well as for beginners who are completely new to the practice.
