Rick Hanson, a psychologist and author, talks about being for yourself. The talk draws on the wisdom of Buddhism and lessons from modern psychology and neuroscience.

    A note from Sean

I keep coming back to this: it is hard to extend care outward if you don’t have enough to begin with. Mindfulness takes the form of self-compassion, a gentle opening to discomfort without judging it.

Try this today. Bring to mind someone, or a pet, who cares about you. Picture them looking at you with that care. For one minute, let it in bit by bit, and notice where you feel it. You are receiving care, not giving it.

This suits anyone who is hard on themselves. If this brings up grief, shame, or old hurt, go gently. Stop when you need to.
