Binaural Beat: Allergy & Sinus Relief

This page describes a binaural-beat track made for allergy and sinus relief. Binaural beats are an auditory illusion: when a slightly different tone plays in each ear through headphones, the brain perceives a third, pulsing tone.

Binaural beats, or binaural tones, are auditory processing artifacts, or apparent sounds, caused by specific physical stimuli. The effect gained wider public awareness in the late 20th century through claims from the alternative medicine community that binaural beats could help induce relaxation, meditation, creativity and other desirable mental states.

The effect on brainwaves depends on the difference in frequency between the two tones. The audio described here uses frequencies in the delta and theta range, which the tradition associates with deep meditation, relaxation, NREM sleep, deep dreamless sleep and loss of body awareness. The brain produces low-frequency pulsations in the amplitude and sound localization of a perceived sound when two tones at slightly different frequencies are presented separately, one to each ear, through stereo headphones. A beating tone is perceived, as if the two tones had mixed naturally. Proponents say binaural beats influence the brain in subtler ways through the entrainment of brainwaves and may bring other health benefits, such as control over pain.

Nothing on this page explains how a tone would affect allergies or sinus symptoms, or shows that it does. These are claims from the binaural-beat tradition, not established medical findings, and this audio is not a treatment for allergies, sinus problems or any other condition. Any effect varies from person to person and may be small or absent. It complements, and does not replace, care from a doctor or other health professional. If symptoms are severe or keep coming back, a doctor can help.
