A note from Sean
One thing I learned as a monk is that I didn’t need nearly as much entertainment and excitement as I thought. I like both, but the moment is more than sufficient. I’d even venture to say that being mindful and being bored can’t live in the same moment.
Try this today. The next time you reach for your phone, stop for one breath. Close your eyes and notice three things about this moment: your breath, your body, and the energy in your mind. Then ask, “What do I really need right now?” The answer may come as a feeling in the body rather than a thought.
Keep going: Working with Boredom and Boredom, Grief, and the Light of Presence.
This suits anyone who fills every quiet moment. If the restlessness under the boredom feels heavy, or you feel low or anxious, go gently. Stop when you need to.
