Tending To This Changing Moment, A Meditation with Sean Fargo

To tend to something is to show it kindness, gentleness and compassion: to offer it our caring attention. In this guided meditation, led by Sean Fargo, we’re asked to tend to our present experience with kind, loving and spacious awareness.

As we witness change in the body with love and care, the offering of space allows this moment to continue unfolding without the added pain of resistance.

Listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. Practice with eyes opened or closed, in a posture that balances comfort with alertness. May this meditation be of benefit to you in your mindfulness journey.

To tend to this moment with care or love may seem an obvious thing to do, although it often takes practice. But what does it mean to tend to this moment with spacious awareness?

When we first bring mindful attention to this present-moment experience, it’s near impossible not to label it as good or bad, right or wrong, liked or disliked, wanted or not. This labeling can have the effect of pigeonholing our experience, of narrowing and limiting each sensation, energy or thought to just one thing.

But as we look more closely and let our mindfulness practice take us deeper, we see that what we’ve labeled is not static, but rather, it’s a process of continual change.

With mindfulness, and in this guided meditation in particular, we are invited to tend to this changing experience with spacious awareness, to allow change to happen without the struggle that arises when we resist. It’s by giving space to sensations, thoughts or feelings that we allow them to soften, release, expand, disperse, or dissipate.

We can react to life’s natural (and perhaps uncomfortable or painful) movement by attempting to fight the flow, or we can flow with it. The choice is ours. However, with tenderness and open-heartedness on our side, we can offer this moment care and the space to unfold as it is meant to.
