On July 19, 2025, the world lost a luminous soul. Joanna Macy, a Buddhist scholar, environmental activist, and beloved teacher, passed peacefully in Berkeley, California, at the age of 96.

As a pioneering voice of ecodharma and the visionary behind The Work That Reconnects, she skillfully wove together deep ecology, systems thinking, and Buddhist wisdom into a profoundly transformative path of engaged spirituality.

Her teachings have shaped countless generations of changemakers, mindfulness teachers, and devoted environmental stewards — myself included. Though her passing leaves a profound void, her radiant spirit endures, guiding all of us to meet the world with compassion, courage, and reverence.

A Life of Interbeing

Joanna Macy’s work was rooted in one radical truth:

Everything is connected.

She invited us to face our ecological despair, not as weakness, but as proof of our deep love for life.

The Work That Reconnects originally known as Despair and Empowerment Work offered a revolutionary framework for healing. It guides us through four movements:

  1. Grounding in Gratitude
  2. Honoring Our Pain for the World
  3. Seeing with New Eyes
  4. Going Forth with Renewed Purpose

This cycle teaches that when we honor grief rather than suppress it, it transforms into compassion and courageous action.

Her words still echo in my mind:

“The world is spacious and alive now, and even sacred. I am so grateful to be here and to be of service.” — Joanna Macy

How Joanna Macy Changed My Path

Years ago, while living as a Buddhist monk, I discovered Joanna’s The Work That Reconnects. That book changed everything.

Until then, I believed spiritual life meant retreating from the world’s noise. Joanna taught me the opposite that true practice demands engagement, compassion in action, and courage in the face of suffering.

Her influence led me out of the monastery and into community. I spent five years at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, then founded MindfulnessExercises.com to make mindfulness accessible worldwide.

Her teachings on The Great Turning humanity’s collective shift toward a life-sustaining society became the heartbeat of my work. They inspired initiatives like Mindful EPA and Mindful NOAA, where environmental mindfulness meets action and policy.

Joanna helped me see that mindfulness isn’t withdrawal it’s responsibility rooted in love.

The Activist Mystic

Joanna Macy embodied what she taught. Her life spanned decades of anti-nuclear activism, environmental education, and global collaboration. She reminded us that hope is not about expecting ease, but about showing up with presence.

“In the buddhadharma there’s no word for hope, because hope takes us out of the present moment. The present moment, brief as it is, is our gift, our choice point.”

From the Elm Dance to the Council of All Beings, Joanna’s practices gave form to collective healing helping us express sorrow, celebrate life, and remember our belonging in the web of existence.

Carrying Her Work Forward

To honor her memory, I invite you to explore Joanna’s free course:

The Work That Reconnects

It’s a living expression of her wisdom an opportunity to engage with the teachings she offered so generously.

Through it, we can continue her mission: to reconnect with ourselves, one another, and the living Earth.

Joanna Macy may have transitioned, but her teachings live on in every mindful breath, every act of courage, and every effort to restore balance to our world.

In Gratitude

As I write this, I feel both grief and profound gratitude grief for a mentor we’ve lost, gratitude for the seeds she planted in all of us.

Her life reminds us that awakening isn’t just personal — it’s planetary.

To honor her is to keep turning toward life, again and again, with reverence and resolve.

“Let us hold her in gratitude, channel her reverence for life, and act with love and fierce curiosity.”

With deep bows of thanks — For Joanna, and for each of you continuing her work.
