About This Binaural Beat for Depression and Anxiety

This page describes a binaural-beat track made with depression and anxiety in mind. Binaural beats are an auditory illusion: when a slightly different tone plays in each ear through headphones, the brain perceives a third, pulsing tone.

The frequency notes below come from the binaural-beat and sound-healing tradition. They are not established medical findings, and this audio is not a treatment for depression, anxiety or any other condition. Any effect varies from person to person and may be small or absent. It complements, and does not replace, care from a doctor or mental-health professional.

If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in the US) or your local emergency number. If low mood or anxiety is getting in the way of daily life, please talk with a doctor or mental-health professional.

    The binaural beat

    • Left ear: 136.1 Hz. The tradition links this tone to the sun (light, warmth, joy), to the earth year (the time the earth takes to go around the sun) and to the heart chakra (Anahata). It is described as relaxing, soothing and balancing, as the “frequency of the soul,” and as having a sedative effect. In Indian music it is said to be a keynote called “sadja” (“father to others”), and it is linked to “OM” and the Christian “Amen.”
    • Right ear: 139.6 Hz.
    • Binaural beat: 3.5 Hz. The tradition attributes to it a feeling of unity with everything, faster language retention, greater receptivity, earth resonance, relief of depression and anxiety, whole-being regeneration and DNA stimulation. This page gives no clinical evidence for these.

    The isochronic tone

    • Carrier frequency: 360 Hz. Called the “balance frequency” in this tradition and said to bring sensations of joy and healing and balance to health. It is also said to derive from the Golden Section.
    • Isochronic pulse: starts at 8 Hz and ends at 8.6 Hz, a range these notes associate with reduced stress and anxiety.
