    A note from Sean

Before I ask the mind to focus, I like to invite some gladness first: things I am grateful for, people I love, a moment of goodness. It helps the body soften and the mind feel safe enough to settle. Then I try to feel joy without holding it too tightly.

Try this today. Take your first sip of tea or coffee and give it three full breaths. Relax your forehead. Let the corners of your mouth turn up a little, as in the worksheet’s meditation. Notice what changes in your body.

This suits anyone who wants more ordinary gladness in the day. Mindfulness opens us to the whole range of feeling, so it is fine if joy isn’t here today. If a smile feels forced, or joy stirs up grief, go gently. Skip the smile and just breathe. Stop when you need to.
