A mindful approach to dressing for the weather

“Dressing for the Weather” is an invitation to slow down and meet your experience with curiosity, honesty, and kindness.

    How mindfulness can help

Mindfulness offers a steady place to stand while you work with any topic. Instead of being carried along by reaction, we notice what is here, sensations, thoughts, and feelings, and respond from presence rather than pressure.

    Gentle steps to try

    1. Begin with the breath. You might take three slow breaths before opening the worksheet, and let the body arrive.
    2. Read with curiosity. Move through each prompt slowly. Notice which questions soften you and which ones tighten you.
    3. Write what is true now. There are no right answers, only honest ones. What is true at this moment is what the worksheet is asking for.
    4. Close with one breath. When you finish, pause. You might place a hand on your heart and thank yourself for showing up.

Insight does not arrive on a schedule. Trust the practice of returning, and the honesty you bring each time you do.

The forecast of our inner world is much like the weather outside: it changes constantly. Storms come our way, and so do clear days when the world feels bright. When it rains and we have to go out, we dress to stay warm and safe. This exercise asks whether we bring the same care to ourselves when the weather inside is stormy, and it helps you prepare mindfully for days of inner upset.

    1. Assess the weather within you right now. Describe the sky, the elements present, and how intense or moderate they are, using words such as clear, sunny, calm, windy, foggy, stormy, drizzle, downpour, thunder, or clearing. Write as an outside observer would, like a weather reporter who knows the weather always changes.
    2. Given the weather present, consider how you might dress or prepare. What would help you get through the storm? If the day is light and clear, how could you enjoy it or give thanks for it? Think about the people, activities, and objects that might help.
    3. Consider another weather system that visits you from time to time. What adjectives describe it, and how might you prepare for it or manage it mindfully when it arrives?
