We all have ‘favorite things’ that help us feel calm, peaceful, happy, and inspired: a favorite tea, a staple ingredient in the pantry, or a person who always knows just what to say. Consciously connecting with them is a way of reminding ourselves what we might turn to when we feel less than content or inspired. A ‘thing’ does not have to be an object. It can also be an activity, a practice, or a person.

The worksheet has you check off the categories where you can think of a favorite thing, such as physical activity, music, a place near or far, a book, a teacher or mentor, a scent, a pet or plant, or an affirmation. You then write the names of your favorite things under each category and add to the list as more come to mind.

Keep the list close for days when you feel down, uninspired, or disconnected. Where you can reach something on the list, let it remind you of an activity to do, a person to talk to, or an object to turn to. Where you can’t, you might picture it in your mind and see whether you can feel some of the joy it brings, with patience and care. The exercise can be done at any time, whatever your mood.
