Joseph Goldstein gives a talk (about 58 minutes) on The Kind Heart and cultivating loving-kindness. Whatever the mind thinks about something fondly, it becomes the mind’s inclination.

    A note from Sean

Loving-kindness practice can hurt. For me it felt like scrubbing my heart with a Brillo pad. I wanted a cotton swab. But our hearts tend to be a lot cleaner.

Try this today. Pick one thing you feel fond of: a pet, a favorite mug, a friend’s laugh. Stay with it for three breaths and notice where the fondness shows up in your body. Do it three times today.

Keep going: Loving-Kindness Meditation Script and Loving Kindness Meditation.

This suits most people. If you are grieving, or kind wishes feel false or sore, start with someone easy and use just a few phrases. Go gently. Stop when you need to.
