    Introduction to Seeing Drawing

Marcia Rose introduces seeing drawing, an exercise that treats drawing as a form of meditative activity. “When we start to draw we begin to see.”

    A note from Sean

Try this today. Pick one ordinary object, such as a cup or a plant. Look at it for a full minute before you draw. Then draw slowly for five minutes, keeping your eyes on the object more than on the paper. Notice your breath and the weight of your hand. Set a timer so you don’t have to watch the clock. Any pencil and scrap of paper will do. Don’t judge the result. The point is seeing.

This suits anyone who thinks they can’t draw. Skill doesn’t matter here. If your hand, wrist, or eyes are sore, or a blank page stirs up self-criticism, go gently. Stop when you need to.
