This is an introductory Guided Meditation by Jack Kornfield. As he explains, he welcomes the newcomers to Spirit Rock and orients about the schedules and practices.

This guided meditation is an introductory practice led by Jack Kornfield to welcome newcomers of Spirit Rock. After a brief introduction to Spirit Rock, Kornfield leads an open-hearted meditation that invites participants to open their attention to the present moment. It is a simple though powerful meditation that can be practiced by both beginners and advanced practitioners alike.

    Simple Mindfulness Techniques

How can a meditation be suitable for both beginners and advanced practitioners? Because while advanced practitioners may have a stronger innate understanding of various mindfulness techniques, mindfulness is actually quite simple. It does not require elaborate or complicated practices; all that is required to practice mindfulness is an openness to the present moment.

In this meditation, Kornfield uses various techniques including body awareness, space awareness, breath awareness, heart awareness, and silence. Unlike many other guided meditations, this practice holds longer periods of silence.

    Sitting with Silence

Whether sitting with silence in this meditation or during your own quiet meditation, we can facilitate our ability to truly rest with this non-doing by tuning into our immediate experience. Do any subtle sounds fill the atmosphere around you? Can you hear your breath as it flows into and out of your body? As we begin to naturally quiet the inner world, we start to hear more of the subtle rumblings of the present moment.
