Listen: The Space In Between audio series

Three short dharma talks by Gil Fronsdal on space and ease — Practice Notes: Ease points to ease not as the absence of effort, but as the soft, spacious quality that lives in the in-between of practice; The Space Between turns toward the quiet gap between thoughts, breaths, and moments where awareness can rest; Dharmette: Space is a companion teaching on the inner roominess that opens when we stop crowding our experience. Plus a four-part long-form retreat series on Emptiness — the liberating teaching that what we take to be solid (self, thought, experience) is more open and spacious than the mind first assumes. Closes with Inner Space, Gateway to Awareness (Tara Brach) — a long-form guided meditation on resting in the spacious awareness that holds every passing experience — and Mystery of Aliveness (Tara Brach), a guided meditation on resting in the bare wonder of being here.

When I lived as a monk in Thailand, I remember sitting quietly with my teacher one morning after meditation.

I was trying so hard to get it right to stop thinking, to sit perfectly still, to look like a true monk. My teacher smiled and said, “Peace doesn’t come from effort. It comes when we stop trying to make this moment any different than it is.”

That moment changed how I understood practice. Mindfulness isn’t about achieving a higher state or escaping discomfort, it’s about meeting life exactly as it is, with compassion, curiosity, and care, even in uncertainty.

    The Heart of the Practice

Whether you’re guiding a client, teaching a class, supporting a patient, or simply sitting with your own emotions the practice is the same.

Be with what’s here. Let it unfold.

When we can be fully present not fixing, not analyzing, just witnessing we create space for others (and ourselves) to feel safe enough to grow.

There’s no need to be perfect. There’s only presence.

“Mindfulness isn’t about fixing others — it’s about being so present with them that they remember they were never broken.” — Sean Fargo
