Benefits of Mindfulness Meditation for Kids

If we practice mindfulness ourselves, it is often easy to understand how mindfulness might be of benefit to our children. Children are not so different than we are, susceptible to the same feelings of anxiety, stress, worry, depression, and a whole range of more comfortable experiences as well.

With that in mind, we can rationally understand how mindfulness can help children to navigate their inner and outer environments in a more harmonious way, even when challenges arise; however, how does this play out in our children? What tangible ways can we see the positive effects that mindfulness has on kids?

There are countless ways that mindfulness positively impacts children. Since mind, body, and spirit are so inextricably interconnected, mindfulness practice improves all aspects of a child’s wellbeing. Numerous studies have also been conducted to explore the topic. Findings suggest that:

  • Mindfulness practice improves self-regulation in children.
  • Mindfulness exercises help to reduce anxiety symptoms in kids with anxiety.
  • Exposing children to mindfulness practice helps them to better understand, express, and navigate their emotions, improving overall emotional wellbeing.
  • Mindfulness can enhance children’s abilities to focus and to concentrate.
  • Children exposed to mindfulness practice have been found to show greater empathy, enhanced social skills, and decreased peer-rated aggression.
  • Mindfulness boosts self-esteem and self-compassion.
  • Mindfulness meditation promotes a healthy brain, boosting cognitive control, memory, and cognitive flexibility.
