How and Why to Build a Workplace Support Network

This worksheet is a wonderful practice of exploring mindfulness for the workplace. Oftentimes, our work lives are left out of the equation when we consider mindfulness practice – and specifically, when we consider our networks of support. This exercise increases our awareness of our interconnectedness with others in our organization – and, it strengthens our ability to build a support network for personal and collective wellbeing.

Building a Support Network

What is a support network? It is essentially a web of relationships through which information and energy disseminates. A healthy support system enables us to uplift others and receive the same support in return. Developing strong webs of interconnectedness is crucial if we want to enhance mindfulness for the workplace.

This worksheet guides us to first consider who is in our support network. Setting aside our relationship to each person, it simply invites us to note what people we are connected to.

From there, we can ask meaningful questions, such as:

  • What information, support, or guidance can I offer to a particular person in my network?
  • What concerns do I have that someone here can support me with?
  • Whose actions don’t I understand? Who could shed light on them for me?

These questions often help us to break through barriers in our habitual modes of thinking. For instance, they might empower us to reach out to someone in need or to ask for clarification or support where we yearn for it. As we do our own work to strengthen our own connections to people within the organization, we often find that the entire web shifts and strengthens as a result. In other words, we send out a ripple that cannot help but to impact all those in the network.
