Overcoming Addiction

As we go through our lives, we pick up emotional, psychological, and spiritual baggage. Things attach themselves to us, and we attach ourselves to things. We develop dependencies, needs, wants, and desires. These feelings can be pleasurable at first, fulfilling various gaps and holes that we might have in our experience. But, over time, they begin to cause us an incredible amount of trouble and pain.

This is one way of coming to understand a complex mechanism like addiction. It’s often not as simple as having an “addictive personality,” or a single traumatic event that results in an addictive habit. Rather, addiction often creeps up on us. Something is missing from our lives, and we fill in the empty space as best we can with a dependency on some particular thing. Whether it’s alcohol, an illicit drug, food, or even a person or relationship, addiction is something that millions of people suffer from.

Binaural beats and addiction

In this free mindfulness exercise, you’ll hear what’s called a binaural beat. A binaural beat is a kind of auditory illusion: when we hear two sine waves that are less than 40 Hz apart (and are both less than 1500 Hz), and when we hear them separately (one sine wave in each of our ears, as with headphones), a third “illusory” tone appears to us that’s equal to the difference between the Hz frequencies of the two sine waves. This third tone is deep, strong, and grounding.

Binaural beats can be used to help you overcome all sorts of negative emotions, including depression and anxiety. In this instance, this binaural beat can help you with addictive tendencies and feelings. Try listening to this recording while practicing mindfulness meditation. See what sensations you experience, and how those sensations feel in your body. Breathe deeply, and remember to be gentle with yourself.
